Kansas City police this morning identified the man fatally shot by a Rockhurst University security officer as Chandler T. Guinn Jr., 23, of Kansas City.

The security officer shot and killed Guinn about 3 p.m. Thursday after he got out of a disabled car, yelled at people and allegedly pointed a gun at the officer.

Prior to the fatal shooting, police said that Guinn’s vehicle repeatedly rammed the back of a woman’s vehicle on 52nd Street just east of Troost Avenue.

He then drove away, but his car stopped working at the intersection of 52nd and Troost.

Witnesses said that he got out of the heavily damaged car, removed his jacket and shirt and started yelling at bystanders while waving a gun. He tried to carjack passing motorists and chased away a doctor who approached him to offer help, police said.

An employee at a nearby business summoned Rockhurst security officers, who confronted Guinn. Guinn struggled with one officer and pointed a gun at that officer. The other officer then shot Guinn in the chest.

Guinn later died at the hospital, becoming the city’s first homicide of the New Year. The term “homicide” is defined as the killing of a human being by another human being. Not all homicides are a criminal act.
