Girl, 3, found with body of father, who had been fatally shot

The Kansas City Star

A 3-year-old girl spent an extended amount of time inside her Kansas City home with her father after he had been fatally shot, police said Friday.

A friend or relative of the 45-year-old victim found the man’s body and the girl inside the home near 22nd Street and Chelsea Avenue about 11:15 a.m. Friday. The friend or relative had gone to the home after being unable to reach the victim by phone.

The victim had been dead for an extended period, police said, but it was too early to know exactly how long the girl was alone with the body. She was checked by doctors and deemed to be in good health. She is now being cared for by the victim’s relatives.

The girl’s mother lives on the West Coast, police and neighbors said.

The couple lived together at the home at one point before the mother moved away. The father had lived at the home about three months, said Homicide Sgt. Joe Mabin.

The victim was a military veteran. Police were still at the home Friday night, looking for evidence.
