Jackson County authorities today charged a 37-year-old man with the shooting death of his wife last year at an Independence apartment complex.

Gary K. Grandberry of Kansas City faces second-degree murder and armed criminal action charges in the slaying of 24-year-old Nia E. Grandberry.

According to court records, Independence police went to a residence in the 9700 block of East 35th Terrace South on Feb. 17, 2011, in response to a 911 call. The caller told police that she had been shot.

Officers found Nia Grandberry’s body in the breezeway of an apartment complex. She was rushed to Centerpoint Medical Center, where she died from two gunshot wounds.

Witnesses told police that she called them and said her husband had shot her.

Gary Grandberry surrendered to police about two hours after the shooting. He turned the couple’s 20-month-old toddler over to officers and was taken into custody.

A few days later, a police K-9 unit found a .25 caliber handgun outside a nearby restaurant. Tests showed that shell casings from the victim’s apartment had been fired from that pistol, according to court records. Other evidence placed Grandberry in that area the night of the shooting.

Grandberry was on parole when the shooting occurred. He had been sentenced to 20 years for second-degree murderand first-degree robbery charges in a 1993 case. Grandberry was accused in the shooting death of Michael A. Wilson of Independence during a robbery.

Authorities revoked Grandberry’s parole and he is now an inmate at the Crossroads Correctional Center in Cameron, Mo.
