Prosecutors on Friday charged a Kansas City man with second-degree murder, alleging that he killed a woman whose body was found last week in a wooded area near a Platte County park.
Gustavo M. Ortiz, 37, is accused of strangling Denise J. Streeter at his home in central Kansas City on Nov. 29 before dumping her body adjacent to Platte Purchase Park at Northwest 100th Street and North Platte Purchase Drive.
According to Jackson County Circuit Court documents, Ortiz had driven to a casino to pick up Streeter, 49, of Shawnee.
They went to his house in the 3200 block of Brooklyn Avenue and used drugs, according to a witness who is not named in the documents.
According to the witness, Ortiz became angry at Streeter before he punched her and strangled her with his hands and an electrical cord.
He and the witness loaded her body in a truck and drove to the Northland to dump the body. Afterward, they disposed of the victim’s purse and clothing as well as the truck, the witness told police.
On Thursday, investigators searched the house where the killing allegedly occurred and used chemical testing to reveal the presence of blood inside. When questioned by detectives, Ortiz said he had picked Streeter up at the casino but dropped her off at another location in Kansas City, Kan. He denied having anything to do with her death.
He is being held on a $250,000 cash bond.
